Did you know that you can make a wallet out of apples? With more than 500,000 products sold to 66 different countries since the beginning of 2017, Gaston Luga understands the importance of taking responsibility for the environment in everything the brand does. “Being a product oriented brand there is no such thing as being 100% sustainable, but that does not mean you should not continue to do your best, always”. says the company’s CEO, Jonas Wistrand.

Gaston Luga has ambitious plans to increase all sustainability efforts company-wide. Part of this is a shift towards using only sustainable materials in all of their products by 2023. “We are continually searching for and developing functional, durable materials to reduce our impact on the environment”, says Jonas Wistrand, CEO at Gaston Luga.

The first of a new range of products with more to follow, is the launch of Frukt Plånkan which is a wallet made of apple leather.

Carry your life effortlessly, without harming the world you are exploring, values that Gaston Luga as a brand strive to adhere to at every stage of their working process, from the materials that are used and how the products are produced through to the everyday running and future workings of the company. Jonas continues, “for as long as Gaston Luga are around, our journeys, both internal and external will continue to improve. It’s our hope that being mindful and respectful of the footprint we leave behind can help reduce the impact of life’s own journey”.

Throughout 2021 and 2022 all existing Gaston Luga products will be re-launched using recycled or biodegradable materials, and new product launches will follow the same standard. The company has taken the following decisions regarding their sustainability which will guide all decisions going forward:

No Animal-Based Materials: No leathers, no adhesives, and no colourings used in the production of our backpacks are sourced from animals.

Plant-Based Leather: A selection of products in 2021 will use vegan apple leather, a biomaterial created from discarded apple skins.

Low Impact Packaging: We ship our products in boxes produced from FSC-certified paper, printed with soy ink, making them eco-friendly and recyclable.

Biodegradable Plastic: Some of our backpacks ship with a protective film. This is 100% biodegradable, compostable within 3-6 months in ideal composting conditions.

Believe it or not, this is made from apples.
